About Jan Schneider

Jan Schneider holds a JD from Yale Law School and a PhD in political science from Yale University. Prior to that, she graduated summa cum laude from Brown University and earned an MIA in international affairs from Columbia.

Jan’s law practice has taken her to the full array of courts, from Small Claims to the U.S. Supreme Court to the World Court. Her clients have ranged from pro bono groups and individuals to foreign countries to international organizations.

Jan has also written books and articles on domestic and international environmental law, baby boomer law and politics, and other contemporary legal and political issues. In addition, long dedicated to public interest activities, Jan has served on numerous boards. The national boards include the American Society of International Law, International Law Association (American Branch), Council on Ocean Law, Law of the Sea Institute and Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute. Locally, they include the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, First Responders for Democracy, Gulf Coast Marine Institute South, Henry Lawrence Youth Foundation, POW-MIA Sarasota Chapter, Protect Our Waters, Sarasota-Manatee National Organization for Women, Suncoast Commission on the Status of Women, and United Nations Association of the National Capitol Area, among others.

In addition, Jan has for many years provided free legal services to residents of public housing in Bradenton and Sarasota. She has a record of residing and working in Congressional District 16 and predecessor CD13 for about a quarter century,
