Jan Schneider appreciates the importance of SeaPort Manatee (rebranded Port Manatee) to the Florida 16th Congressional District and beyond. The impact of the port is huge and growing, with record cargo activities in recent years. Moreover, it operates without any local tax support.

SeaPort Manatee is the nearest deepwater port to the expanded Panama Canal. The port offers container, liquid and dry bulk, breakbulk, heavylift, project and general cargo customer services. It generates more than $5.1 billion annually for the local economy, including providing 37,000 jobs. Port Manatee, of course, interacts with the federal government in many ways. SeaPort Manatee has a longstanding partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers for the Manatee Harbor Navigation Project. In 2023, Congress authorized an amendment to the Project Cooperation Agreement to reimburse the port for the federal share of construction of the south channel extension back in 2012.

Moreover, SeaPort Manatee is benefitting from the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Bipartisan Infrastructure Law). In September 2022, the United States Department of Transportation announced that the federal government had awarded nearly $12 million to the Manatee County Port Authority from the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America competitive grant program. The funds are being used to expand the capacity of the port’s container yard and to modernize infrastructure. In addition, SeaPort Manatee has over the years received well over $14 million for cybersecurity from the Port Security Grant Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and this does not exhaust its federal funding sources.

Unfortunately, on August 31, 2023, SeaPort Manatee reported a spill of heavy, unrefined oil to the National Response Center. The next day the United States Coast Guard began the cleanup process and investigation into the cause of the spill. The cleanup was rapid and successful, but Coast Guard was unable to determine the source and responsible party.

Jan will energetically advocate in Congress for all available assistance to SeaPort Manatee.  Opponent Vern Buchanan (R-FL16) has shown considerable interest in SeaPort Manatee, but he voted against both the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act and the American Rescue Plan Act.
